Protect your website content

The content of any website is the ruling factor and treasured possession. A website with a quality and meaningful content proves to be very lucrative for the business; it draws lots of visitors to the site and bolsters its ranking in the search engines. It takes a lot of effort to develop quality contents and you would never like to share your hard work with anyone. But, there are probabilities when you can find your own content posted on some other website without your knowledge. In addition, due to duplicate content your search engines rankings also suffer. Despite of all your efforts to protect your content, there are hackers and thieves that can easily steal away your content. It is really frustrating seeing your content in some other website and you are helpless to do anything. However, mentioned below are some easy tips that can help to discourage content theft and make the process more difficult

Copyright your website Content

Copyrighting your website can protect it from content theft. Once you have acquired copyrights for your website content, you can protect it from the people who copy every word of your content and then place it on their website without your information and giving no credits to you. For copyright of your website, you can go through the Copyright Office website at www.copyright.gov and register your site. Make it as early as possible for your interest; you need to ensure that you complete the application within three months of launching your website. You are required to pay a processing fee along with sending copies of all web pages whose content you want to protect. To be on a safer side, you can create a CD that contains copies of all the files of your website and keep it safe as a back-up of your files. Moreover, you can insert copyright meta tag on all your web pages that contain your company’ name or website name. You will receive a “Certificate of Registration” once your application has been accepted. It all helps you to sue any person or company if he tries to steal your work. You can even ask them (hackers) for compensation.

Altering the Website Code
Altering the website code may not save your content from professional hackers and thieves but it can certainly save it from amateurs. To do this, you should first remove all the unnecessary spaces in HTML code of your website so that it becomes difficult for people to read through the whole code and find individual text options. Now it won’t be easier for thieves to simply lift your content filled web pages.

The other thing you can do is to disable the right click function of your website by using Java Script, since it prevents people from selecting text and images on your website and copying it on some other places. But, this is to be remembered genuine visitors who come to your website for information often get annoyed with this setting.

Change the text contents
The next thing you can do is using Photoshop or any other image editing software to change the text elements into images. To do this, you can select the text you want to change and open a new image file and select a suitable size to accommodate the body of the text.  Sharpen the image and save the file. But, do not forget that large images have high resolution make web pages slower to load. So, it is advised to save the text images in medium resolution. Though people will be able to print the file but they have to re-type every word of it to reuse the contents.
